'It must be said that I have always been good at moving on. I put things behind me quite effortlessly (wives, children, films, houses) and I live for, and through, my work. When I'm not acting - whether it be King Lear at the National Theatre, or a homicidal android in the film Alien - I find it difficult to know precisely who I am.'

IAN HOLM

Over the last fifty years, Ian Holm has become one of the most respected and widely admired actors of his generation. He has worked on stage, screen, television and radio. He has appeared in cult and popular classics such as Alien, Chariots of Fire, The Fifth Element and Lord of the Rings. On stage, his King Lear was reckoned to be one of the best this century, while others remember him for his portrayal of J M Barrie in The Lost Boys for the BBC. The winner of many awards, Ian Holm was appointed a CBE in 1990 and knighted in 1997.

Acting My Life is Ian Holm's candid look back at his life. It is a compelling mix of anecdote and observation, and he writes with insight about his childhood growing up next to the mental asylum, the women in his life, his on-stage breakdown, and his battle with cancer.

Ian Holm's story is both honest and touching. His one lifelong commitment has been to his acting, and that same intensity is now brought to his writing.
