Dr DG Hessayon grew up in Manchester where he discovered his love of plants in the family garden. He read Botany at the University of Leeds and later lectured in horticulture in Ghana and Manchester. Deciding a career in academia was not for him, Dr Hessayon took up a position as chief scientist with Pan Britannica Industries.

It was here, at pbi, that Dr Hessayon first approached his boss with the idea for a new gardening book. His boss thought it wouldn't work, but Dr Hessayon was so sure that he offered to pay the company back its investment if the book failed. In 1959, Be Your Own Gardening Expert was published and the rest, as they say, is history…

Be Your Own Gardening Expert was first published in 1959 - 40 years on and 20 editions later, as The Garden Expert, it has sold over 5 million copies

Dr Hessayon has gone on to write many more Expert books covering topics from garden DIY to herbs and vegetables, roses to rock and water gardens and everything in between. The current bestselling title is The New Vegetable and Herb Expert, other consistent top ten chart bestsellers include The Rock and Water Expert, The Tree and Shrub Expert, The Fruit Expert, The Greenhouse Expert, The Flowering Shrub Expert and The New Flower Expert.

It is no wonder that Expert are considered to be the world's bestselling gardening books with worldwide sales of over 45 million!

'If you haven't seen them… you must have just returned from a life spent in Outer Mongolia'
The Independent

The easy-to-follow design of the Expert books is based on the old collectable cigarette card philosophy - get as much information as possible into the space available.

'Nobody has improved on the formula for getting facts on the page in the most immediately intelligible manner'
Mail on Sunday

The Expert books cut through the technical jargon to give the gardener the information he or she needs to know in order to do the job properly and grow plants successfully. Dr Hessayon always emphasises individual choice - there are no 'correct' colour schemes or layouts. He explains the main options available to the gardener, but firmly believes that gardens are a matter of personal choice and enjoyment.
